CHARACTER
Name: Simon Blackquill
Canon: Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies
Age: 28
Timeline: December, 2027 a few days before his scheduled execution (after Case 3, but before Case 4)
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: n/a
Personality:
Take that! Simon Blackquill is a walking contradiction. A prosecutor and a convict, he should despise the law and all its servants, but instead he holds a strong sense of justice and believes that order and due process should open the path to the truth. He despises the dark age of the law that he himself helped usher in, and hates watching the legal system drive itself deeper into darkness, yet he plays the part of the twisted samurai prosecutor with an immense amount of flourish. He does not for a second deny his crime or his guilt-- but that in itself is a contradiction, since Simon is not guilty of the crime he was convicted for.
Hold it! Why would Simon accept a false charge-- one that landed him on death row? Surprisingly enough, Simon can sometimes be compassionate and fiercely loyal. One such example is the event that landed him behind bars in the first place. When Simon discovered the cold body of his dead master and her blood-covered daughter, Athena, was the only other person at the scene, Simon made sure to implicate himself however possible so that the young girl would not be suspect of the murder. Without evidence to prove Athena's innocence and with circumstantial evidence pointing toward her guilt, Simon confessed to the murder of Metis Cykes-- insisted upon being incarcerated and well, the rest isthe dark age of the law history. Like a samurai, there is no length he won't go in his devotion to his "lord." Though with her dead, he's technically a 'ronin' but we're gonna keep it simple like Capcom, ok?
Uh, so about that samurai thing...
Silence! The funny part about translating a "samurai" character into English is that... you end up with someone who acts like a Japanese samurai, uses Japanese honorifics like "-dono" and wields an imaginary sword with so much flourish that people are actually afraid of him. Which is all well and good until you remember, Ace Attorney takes place in America. Then you just gotta shake your head and laugh. Thanks to this disparity, Simon Blackquill (unlike his Japanese counterpart, Jin Yuugami,) is basically a huge closet nerd. He has a bit of a British accent, but he's probably watched so many samurai movies that he started wishing he was in one-- and there you go. Not like he had much else to do in jail besides make nice with the inmates and contemplate his own false conviction.
Objection! So Simon Blackquill is has a soft spot for all things Japanese, and a bit of a dark sense of humor, and very little respect for anyone he deems 'cowardly.' He's pretty standard as far as Ace Attorney prosecutors go. He might goad and manipulate and impede the defense however he can, but he does it all in his search for the truth. While he studied the same sort of psychology before his incarceration, he wasn't overtly malicious about it and was overall a lot kinder than he turned out to be. Now that Simon is serving time to ensure Athena's innocence, he plays the role of the 'dangerous criminal' to a T, only slipping truly into what one could call "bad" when it comes to his vendetta against The Phantom, the true killer and the cause of all of Blackquill's woes. 7 years of rotting in jail means a guy's gotta cope somehow, right?
Background: Simon Blackquill was a promising young prosecutor who, seven years prior to the start of Dual Destinies, confessed to the murder of his mentor, Metis Cykes. His first appearance speaks for himself: he is a man who feels no remorse for his actions, with no respect for his shackles or the sentence that sullies him. He prosecutes in chains and holds nothing back in the courtroom-- pity the poor lawyers who have to face his blade. (The blade is justice.) Despite being a criminal, he is honorable, just and a master manipulator. They call him the Twisted Samurai for a reason.
Simon had been hot on the trail of an international spy known only as "the Phantom," and was interested in learning analytical psychology from Dr. Cykes so that he could better serve the justice system and track down the mysterious Phantom, who was known only for the fact that his emotional responses were unnatural. Using psychology (yeah, just go with it,) Simon was known for manipulating witnesses into telling him what he wanted to know, and squeezing out the truth where other attorneys were being stonewalled. He was still a rookie back then, but he showed great potential... which is why his conviction rocked the courts to such an extent.
Link for the rest on the Wikia. Basically, the events of the game follow Athena, Apollo and Phoenix as they draw closer to the truth behind the incident 7 years prior. When the Phantom emerges again, Blackquill's vendetta in the courtroom becomes apparent, and he grows increasingly determined to pin a murder on Apollo's client-- the man he suspects could be the Phantom, or at least draw the Phantom out of hiding. Blackquill's sudden desperation makes all the more sense when you consider he's also short on time. The last two cases in Dual Destinies take place on the eve of Blackquill's execution. Without his sister inciting a hostage situation to force a re-trial, Blackquill would have faced death on a false charge-- all because he wanted to protect Athena from that same false charge.
Thankfully, Blackquill is freed of all charges thanks to the combined effort of Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth and Apollo Justice, who bring new contradictions to light and prove that neither Simon Blackquill nor Athena Cykes could have killed Athena's mother. This, therefore, brings to light the existence of a third party-- the Phantom at last, whose true identity shocks the courtroom and it's awesome. Simon, now a free man, returns to the courtroom to prosecute the monster behind the hell he's lived in the last 7 years and together with Apollo, they finally force him to confess the truth. And it's amazing. And then Athena and Simon hug. And everyone is adorable.
And once again, the day is saved! Thanks to... the power of friendship!Haha, more like the power of "always trusting in your client, who happens to be your friend too."
Abilities: Simon possesses a fair degree of strength, as he is able to break out of his shackles over and over again during the course of the game. He also appears to know some level of swordplayspecifically iaijitsu, since he was able to pick up a katana and chop up a robot in the case seven years prior. (Just trust me on this) He is also a master of words and uses psychology to see through people to read their intentions and play their weaknesses and insecurities, making him a master manipulator and a very capable liar when he wants to have his way.
He also has a pet hawk named Taka, who retrieves things like paper for him and normally sits on his shoulder (unless he decides someone needs a good thrashing.) Taka's sex isn't super confirmed but judging by her rather large size, I'm going to go with female. It's therefore not a stretch to assume Blackquill is a trained falconer, as he has trained Taka to fly back to him on command. They probably don't teach falconry in jail, so let's just say he learned it beforehand.
First Person:
It would appear I find myself outside the jurisdiction of the law.
[ Blackquill smirks. Wait, is the watch... floating? That would explain why Taka isn't at her usual perch. You may even see something like talons at the edge of the screen. Blackquill's large, heavy shackles rattle as he brings a hand to his temple with a smirk. ]
Be there any so-called 'warriors of justice' present? Perhaps you would be interested in reinstating my sentence. Else, I believe I have fulfilled my civic duty to turn myself in, and to inform you that this apparent 'jailbreak' was no act of my own. An attempted decampment would be folly for a man such as I.
[ Though the thought has crossed his mind once or twice... ]
Now then, I have neither the time nor the patience to waste lollygagging about. I have a prior arrangement in court to which I cannot tardy. When can I expect the next train to arrive?
Third Person: Test Drive meme!
Note: While I played with the idea a bit in the Test Drive meme, I'm afraid Simon would... insist he's guilty for as long as no one tells him Athena was also cleared of her charges. Because that's the kind of big brother samurai he is. He'll gladly break his shackles, just not take them off.
